The Congress party has called it a “black day” for Indian democracy after the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla disqualified Congress MP Rahul Gandhi from the Lower House for repeatedly disrupting proceedings. The party has accused the government of stifling the opposition’s voice by resorting to such measures. In a statement, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that the party will not be deterred and will continue to raise its voice against the government’s anti-people policies.

The move comes after Gandhi led a protest by Congress MPs in the Lok Sabha, demanding a discussion on the Pegasus spyware issue. The Speaker had warned the Congress leader several times to maintain decorum and observe the rules of the House. However, Gandhi continued to disrupt the proceedings by tearing up a copy of the day’s parliamentary agenda and throwing it towards the Speaker.

The Congress party has also alleged that the Speaker’s decision was influenced by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party has said that the decision is a clear indication of the government’s intolerance towards dissent and opposition. The Congress has further announced that it will launch a nationwide protest against the Speaker’s decision and the government’s attempts to stifle opposition voices.
