“Massive earthquake strikes Afghanistan, leaving a trail of destruction and devastation”
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake’s epicenter was located 56 kilometers (34.8 miles) south-southwest of the town of Faizabad, at a depth of 190 kilometers (118 miles). There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage, but the quake was felt across the region, including in neighboring Pakistan and India. Officials in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province reported that the tremors had caused panic, and some minor damage to buildings. In the Indian capital of New Delhi, buildings swayed for several minutes, but there was no major damage. Afghanistan is prone to earthquakes, with many of them causing significant damage and loss of life due to the country’s weak infrastructure. The USGS estimated that Monday’s quake would have been felt by over 49 million people, potentially putting thousands of people at risk of injury or damage to their homes. The organization has issued a green alert, indicating a low likelihood of casualties and damage.
